FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What should I know before I call Marksmen?
It is always beneficial to have a scope of work that you are looking at having done. This may include how many oil wells you would like sprayed, the size of the area you are looking for weed control on, and/or what type of weeds you are looking to control. This information helps Marksmen to provide you with an accurate quote. If you are unfamiliar with weed control, or vegetation management practices, please get in touch with our office and we will be more then willing to help you out.
What is the difference between Selective and Non-Selective Spraying?
Selective spraying uses herbicides which are selective in the types of weeds that they will kill. These herbicides will target your broadleaf weeds such as Scentless Chamomile, Canada Thistle, and Dandelions while leaving your established grasses intact and alive. Non-selective spraying involves the use of herbicides which targets any type of vegetation that is growing. In effect leaving your ground bare and free of vegetation.
What is the duration of the herbicide?
The products we use at Marksmen Vegetation all have different lengths of residual activity. Some of our products will hold down weeds for a full growing season, while other products remain residual for only a few months. Roundup which is a contact-based herbicide does not have any residual activity in the soil. Depending on the length of control you are looking for, at Marksmen we have the right herbicide for your specific needs.
Are the herbicides that you use safe?
All of the herbicides that we use at Marksmen Vegetation are user friendly. The days of requiring a respirator to use a herbicide are gone. We are constantly in contact with our herbicide providers to make sure that we are providing our clients with the most effective, safe products on the market. We recognize that length of exposure is an important issue with any herbicide application. At Marksmen we pride ourselves on communication with the public when we are spraying, and recommend staying out of the spray zone until the herbicide has dried.
How long after the application can I see results?
How quickly application results are noticeable depends on the type of herbicide being used. Most herbicides we use at Marksmen you will be able to notice wilting and drooping of the targeted weeds in two to four days with visible browning and deterioration within seven to ten days.
Why Do I need Weed Control?
Weeds compete with desirable grasses for water, space, light and nutrients. They are aggressive and can take over established grasses if not kept in check. It is when this type of imbalance occurs that many customers request help from Marksmen Vegetation. Before this happens, a preventive approach to controlling weeds is recommended. This should include regularly mowing, and spraying when weeds first appear. Weeds can also be controlled through digging or hand pulling. This method is much more labour intensive and is not always effective since many weeds can reproduce through vegetative parts (their root system) if they are not entirely dug out.
What is a Noxious Weed?
A species designated as a noxious weed under the Weed Control Act is one that:
Is difficult to manage on agricultural land once established and will reduce the yield and quality of the crop being grown;
Negatively affects the health and well-being of livestock; or
Poses a risk to the health and well-being of agricultural workers.
Examples of noxious weeds in Alberta include: Scentless Chamomile, Canada Thistle, Perennial Sow Thistle, Common Tansy, and Toadflax.
